Langley, BC – The City of Langley is inviting competitors of all ages and abilities to swim, bike and run in the 16th Annual TRI-IT Triathlon on Sunday, June 12 at the Al Anderson Memorial Pool. Check-in begins at 7:00 am and the triathlon starts at 8:00 am for youth and 9:30 am for adults.
The event has categories for youth ages 5-14, adults, seniors, and relay teams of up to three people. Prizes will be awarded to the first place male and female participant in each age category.
To acknowledge the passing of former Council member Dave Hall who was a key advocate of the TRI-IT Triathlon, a new category has been created for participants 60+ years. The “Dave Hall Classic category” proves once and for all that age is just a number and is not a barrier to a healthy and active lifestyle. In memory of Councillor Dave Hall there will also be a ceremonial tree unveiling after the TRI-IT Triathlon.
“The wonderful thing about this event is that we have first-time triathletes and experienced race-goers participating,” says City of Langley Mayor Ted Schaffer. “It’s great to see people of all ages coming together for a day of fitness and friendly competition.”
In preparation for the event, Mountain Equipment Co-op will be offering complimentary bike checks and basic repairs for all participants on Thursday, June 9 from 6:00-8:00 pm at the Al Anderson Memorial Pool. Youth racers and their parent or guardian are encouraged to attend an orientation at the same location at 6:00 pm. There will also be an orientation for volunteers at 7:00 pm.
The City of Langley encourages people wanting to train for the triathlon to take advantage of the running track and spin bikes at the Timms Community Centre as well as a month-long triathlon training course offered at the Al Anderson Memorial Pool.
Registration for the TRI-IT Triathlon is available in person at the Timms Community Centre, by phone at 604-514-2940, or online at www.city.langley.bc.ca/parks-recreation/events. Early bird pricing and complimentary event t-shirts are available to those who register by Sunday, May 8.
“All levels of skills and abilities are welcome!” says Christine Daum, Recreation Supervisor at the City of Langley. “The TRI-IT Triathlon is a fun, family event geared towards those new to Triathlons. It’s great to see people of all ages coming together for a day of fitness and friendly competition.”
Volunteers are needed for various roles on race day including set up, clean up, check in, timing crew, course marshalls, finish line greeters, transition area monitors, and general information.
