Candidates for Mayor

Peter Fassbender

I have lived in Langley City for over 42 years with my wife Charlene and we have always been very involved in the community.
I served two terms as a School Trustee, one term as a City Councillor and three terms as Mayor.  I then became a Provincial MLA and Senior Minister in the Provincial Government.  Prior to my years in public service, I had a very strong business career in the communications field with one of Canada’s largest communications firms.
I have always been passionate about Langley City’s future and was part of the team that developed a vision for the City that was recently updated and renewed.
I believe that City residents deserve to see their community thrive and prosper.  Issues such as Re-development, Public Safety, Transportation, Housing Affordability, Homelessness and the Opioid Crisis are high on my agenda should City Voters elect me as their Mayor.

Jeff Jacobs

My name is Jeff Jacobs and I’m running for Langley City Council.  For over 30 years I’ve been proud to call Langley my home while watching our City grow into a blossoming community.  I’ve been a frontline municipal worker for the past 15 years and bring good knowledge and experience which should serve as assets to our City Council.  I strongly believe in transparency and accountability combined with progressive and meaningful decision-making.  I believe our City has real potential to be a hub for interactive, innovative and inclusive activities for everyone.  Now is a critical time for our City to continue forward, adding a fresh outlook while lending an ear to members of our community.  I’ll work diligently to ensure provincial and federal funds are allotted accordingly to address issues facing our City such as contributing more to community events, reducing homelessness and improving local transit.  We’re better together.

Teri James

Over the next four years we need a strong Council to ensure we are moving in the right direction, addressing the more challenging issues of homelessness, drugs, transportation and pressures on our infrastructure.
I served three terms on City Council from 2005 to 2014 and stepped back to spend time with my family. Watching this past term has helped me decide that this is what I am very passionate about. I have always immersed myself in Langley City as the Executive Director of the DLBA, volunteer and participant on numerous committees, and I will continue to work hard as your representative.
As a result of my vast experience and involvement in this community, I have gained a genuine understanding of the needs and challenges facing Langley City. It is important to me that we keep this community vibrant for everyone and maintain the quality of life for years to come.

Andrew Mercier

I am running for City Council to build a safer and more affordable Langley City.
I was raised in the City and attended Blacklock, Simonds, and LSS. As an active member of the Langley community, I want to see positive change in the City that I grew up in.
As a new father, I understand that Council needs to protect affordable rental units and ensure that families have the space they need to grow, and stay in the City. Council also needs to work on addressing the homelessness crisis and champion a community-based approach to policing.

I oppose the unfair mobility tax—folks can’t afford an extra $2,700 in taxes.
I am a lawyer and currently serve on the Board of Governors of the University of the Fraser Valley, and on the Nominations and Elections Committee at Vancity Credit Union.

Mike Solyom

My name is Mike Solyom and I am running to make Langley a better, more prosperous community with a more efficient, more effective government. I have lived in Langley for most of my life and teach Economics nearby at the University of the Fraser Valley.

My wife and I have put down roots in the City to raise our growing family. I am running to ensure that, in 10 years, we live in a place where my kids will be able to safely ride their bikes to Downtown Langley and where, 20 years from now, my kids will be able to get to good jobs or a local campus without inefficient gridlock. Then, in 30 years, they will be able to start their own families in their own homes right here in Langley.

I’m asking for your support of this vision of our shared future.

David Stingl

Do you mind if I start by admitting that I’m a little frustrated?  Maybe even a tiny bit angry.  It’s the main reason that I’m running for Langley City Council.  As a small business owner in the heart of downtown Langley City, it was losing the GoodTimes Cruise-In that finally pushed me into the realization that I needed to get involved.  I’m glad you’re still reading this, it means you care.  In a bio this small all I can do is let you know that I care too.  I’m not looking to become the next career politician and I’m fully aware that being on City Council is kind of a thankless job.  I will represent YOU.  Please connect with all the candidates including the current council members hoping to get re-elected.  Make an informed decision and vote for whomever you believe will best represent you and all of Langley City.

Shelley Coburn

Born in Langley and having spent most of my life here I have developed strong ties to this community.  First elected to the Board of Education in 2014 I have spent the last four years passionately advocating for students and parents in a system that is stretched to capacity.  Once again we are about to undergo some significant changes and we are going to be faced with some very difficult decisions.  The City residents deserve a strong voice at the table to represent their best interests – I want this voice to be mine.  I am deeply committed to this community, I live here and I raise my children here.  I love what I do – I have enjoyed nothing the way I have enjoyed being a Trustee – it has been my honour and a privilege to serve and I cannot wait to be serving for another four years.

Tony Ward

“When we invest in our kids, we strengthen our community, and build our future.”

Lifelong Langley resident, Tony Ward, is seeking election as School Trustee.

As a father of three school age children (in three different Langley schools), he has a personal stake in providing good governance. A 25-year Township of Langley employee in a broad range of roles, Tony understands the diverse school district responsibilities and public accountability.

Tony strongly supports French Immersion, Fine Arts, Fundamental schools, and entrepreneurial programs that challenge students to cultivate creativity and engage their peers. Maximized resources and opportunities enable students to pursue excellence.

Trustees need to engage parents throughout their child’s educational journey as well as ensure open dialogue, transparency, and well-thought decisions.

Let’s enrich our staff, edify our schools, and engage our students.

Every child is precious; children are our greatest investment in our community’s future.

After all, community starts with kids.
