The Assistant Fire Chief is part of the Fire Rescue Services Management Team and reports to the Fire Chief. This position is responsible for fulfilling the functions of Training Officer and Occupational Health and Safety Officer for Langley City Fire Rescue Services. As Training Officer this position assists the Deputy Fire Chief in and is accountable for the development, coordination, management, supervision and budget of training programs for career and paid-call personnel for all matters related to training. As the Occupational Health and Safety Officer for the department, this position provides advice, support and acts as a resource in the formation, implementation, promotion and monitoring of health and safety and is accountable for carrying out these responsibilities while adhering to legislative requirements to ensure the City’s compliance. The position may assume command of the department in the absence of the Fire Chief and the Deputy Fire Chief and acts as Duty Officer on a rotation basis during non–standard hours. The position exercises considerable independence of judgment and action in carrying out assignments in accordance with department policies, plans and objectives.
You will have proven skills as an outstanding leader, communicator and coach and will have strong technical and labour relations skills along with considerable knowledge of legislation related to the fire service. Qualifications for this position include graduation from Grade 12 plus supplementary courses at the post-secondary level or technical courses related to the position, Fire Service Instructor II, a minimum 10 years of fire suppression experience, a minimum 5 years of supervisory qualifications, considerable experience in Occupational Health and Safety and a valid and subsisting BC Class 5 driver’s licence (Class 3 with Air Brake Endorsement is desirable). Additionally, desired are Certifications in Incident Safety Officer, Fire Officer II or III, Incident Command System 100 and 200, Rope Rescue Technician and HazMat Technician. A competitive salary range of $132,513 – $144,800 (2022 rate) commensurate with experience and an excellent benefits package is offered with this Exempt role.

Reporting to the Director of Engineering, Parks and Environment, the Manager of Engineering and Parks Operations is responsible for the vision, planning, budgeting and managing the day-to-day activities of the Engineering and Parks Operations Division which includes roads, drainage, fleet maintenance, water and sewer utilities, City parks and boulevards and solid waste management. This role develops, evaluates and implements programs to improve operations of the Division, prepares cost estimates for projects, prepares and maintains operational reports and records, and approves all material and equipment invoices and timesheets. The Manager of Engineering and Parks Operations is involved in the preparation of the annual capital and operating budget, on-going monitoring and adherence to same and investigates and recommends replacement and new equipment purchases. This position works with a variety of internal and external contacts and represents the Department at various meetings and/or committees.

Graduation from an Institute of Technology with a Certificate in Civil Engineering or related discipline or completion of technical courses related to the work and considerable leadership experience within a municipal operations setting are desirable. Candidates must be registered or be eligible for registration as an Applied Science Technologist in B.C. A valid Class 5 Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia is also required.
