Sounds of Summer 2019

Musicians from around the Lower Mainland are coming to McBurney Plaza this summer. Rock, folk, jazz, classical, world - no matter what your style, there's a performance for you. All concerts are free to attend and fun for all ages. Concerts are weather dependent; any cancellations or changes will be posted to this page.

July 3

Performance by: Patricia Dunphy & The Key Collective

Genres: Alternative, Children's, Classic Rock, Country, Dance, Folk

More about the Band: Dunphy; also known as Tricia is a singer/songwriter who performs at open mic’s, jams, various festivals and venues around Greater Vancouver, BC, Canada. The music she plays includes alternative, folk, rock, blues, and country blues with an electric or acoustic sound. The lyrics in some of her compositions are thought provoking, involving subjects such as, tolerance and acceptance.  Tricia’s Album, Urban Folk was released in 2014 as an independent label. She is currently collaborating with "The Key Collective '' a trio and electric band with Will and Lori Firstbrook.  Tricia is presently putting together a live acoustic EP, an electric sound and a children's EP.  She also plays with “Tricia & the Rooster Tails”.   As a Child and Youth Practitioner, Patricia utilizes an Expressive therapy model in her practice. With this she uses music, writing, creative movement and fine arts to teach social skills.  Patricia Dunphy is available as a solo artist, acoustic trio (with Will and Lori Firstbrook, ‘ Tricia & the Firstbrook Collective’ , or electric band.

More about the Band: Based in South Surrey, BC, flutist Kate Yoshitomi and guitarist Michael Gillette are Silverwood; a duo that loves performing a wide variety of music including jazz, Latin, Celtic, folk, and “golden oldies” for audiences of all sizes.  Both talented soloists, Kate and Mike came together in 2011 to form Silverwood and have performed at numerous events across Vancouver and the Lower Mainland since that time.  Working with Pat Glover at Blue Frog Studios in White Rock, Silverwood has self-published three CDs:  Across Time, Christmas Morning, and Crossing (in production).

More about the Artist: Troy Toma is a singer, songwriter and performer.  After high school all he wanted to do is play his guitar so enrolled in college where he studied classical guitar for 3 years.  Performing a Vivaldi Concerto was the highlight of his college days. Since then he has been teaching, writing, performing and sharing his love for music.   Troy played in various local bands including Force Fed and Prophecy before setting off on his own. In the past 6 years he has released 3 CD’s and 1 Single, which has recently been released to radio.  He can be found playing solo acoustic and full band shows throughout the lower main land.  Troy is the owner and operator of Cadence School of Music in Langley where he teaches both acoustic and electric guitar, bass and ukulele.

More about the Band: Quintessential Jazz Band has been playing jazz together throughout the Lower Mainland and beyond since 2004.  We love to play both jazz standards and our original compositions, interpreting them with our own sound and unique flair that we call “Classic Jazz with a Twist.”  The band has enjoyed positive reviews and some radio airplay for their recently released their fourth album “Expressivo.”    Quintessential was the winner of the 2018 Fraser Valley Music Award in the Jazz category.  More info about Quintessential at

Performance by: Peace Arch Chorus

More about the Band: Peace Arch Chorus is an award winning women’s a cappella chorus that sings in barbershop style. They currently consist of 25 singers and operate under the umbrella organization Sweet Adelines International. The group performs throughout the BC Lower Mainland hosting and participating in a variety of live shows as well as competing annually in the Sweet Adelines International Contest.

Peace Arch Chorus rehearses on Wednesdays at the Newton Cultural Centre in Surrey and new voices are always welcome. You can find out more on their website

Performance by: The Irish Fiddle Orchestra

Genres: Classical, Celtic

More about the Band: The Irish Fiddle Orchestra is a nine piece group of musicians that perform traditional celtic music in a classical style. Included in the repertoire are numerous pieces composed by Ireland's most famous composer and harpist, Turlough O'Carolan, whose style fit in with other baroque European composers.  The playlist includes everything from lively jigs and reels to soulful airs.

More about the Band: From a vision to reality, we are proud to introduce you to the Rue Saint Georges Sax Ensemble. Our local City of Langley band started up this year, bringing together an amazing group of players with a variety of instrumentation ranging from soprano sax down to bass. Enjoy the full rich sounds of your Disney favorites, Classic Ragtime, Pop Hits and other upbeat music. With something for the whole family, we look forward to entertaining you at the Sounds of Summer Concert Series.
