Langley City, British Columbia – In recognition of Fire Prevention Week (October 7 - 13),  starting this weekend Langley City Fire Rescue Service will host a variety of fun and informative events to help raise awareness about this year’s theme:
“Look.  Listen.  Learn.  Be aware.  Fire can happen anywhere.”

This year’s information and events focus on educating people about three basic but essential steps to take to reduce the likelihood of having a fire – and how to escape safely in the event of one:

  • Look for places fire could start
  • Listen for the sound of the smoke alarm
  • Learn two ways out of every room.

“Home fires today can burn faster than ever.  Occupants may have as little as one to two minutes to escape safely from the time the smoke alarm sounds.  Knowing how to use that time wisely takes planning and practice,” said Captain Brent Perry, Fire Prevention Officer.  “While Langley City Fire Rescue Service is focusing on home fires, we encourage everyone to be aware of their surroundings wherever they go.  No matter where you are, look for available exits.  If the alarm system sounds, take it seriously and exit the building immediately.”

Fire prevention information packages will be delivered to local elementary students and as a reminder of the importance of fire safety, Langley City Fire Rescue Service is encouraging all schools to hold a fire drill during Fire Prevention Week.  Participating Langley City schools will be entered into a draw for a $200 gift certificate provided by the Downtown Langley Business Association.  Other Fire Prevention Week activities will include:
