City crews will conduct water main flushing between Monday, April 1 to Wednesday, May 1, 2024.
Water main flushing is a regulatory maintenance practice used to clean water distribution pipes. This is accomplished by sending a rapid flow of water through the water mains. Here’s a closer look into why it is done and what happens:
- Remove Sediments: Over time, sediments build up in water mains. Flushing helps remove these deposits, ensuring cleaner water.
- Improve Water Quality: The water entering distribution mains is of high quality, but it can deteriorate if not managed properly. Flushing maintains water quality by removing impurities.
- Enhance System Operation: Flushing identifies weak or problem areas, improves hydraulic capacity, and extends the life of system components.
- Temporary Discoloration: You may experience low pressure and discoloured water during the flushing. Discoloured water is not a health hazard. If discolouration is noticed, run cold water until the water runs clear.
- Discharging Water: This is supervised by city staff who ensure the water runoff runs unimpeded to city drains.
