The Gateway of Hope, in partnership with the City of Langley and BC Housing, is opening its doors to those seeking refuge from the plunging winter temperatures. The Extreme Weather Response Program (EWR) has been activated to provide additional emergency beds for individuals experiencing homelessness during periods of extreme weather conditions that threaten their health and safety. The EWR program will provide overnight shelter on Thursday, January 11th through Sunday, January 14th from 7 pm to 10 am.

Additionally on those dates, the Warming Centre will be operating between 10 am and 5 pm. The dining room will then open at 5 pm allowing guests to remain indoors and enjoy a warm meal until the overnight shelter opens.

Location for Emergency Warming Response Program and Warming Centre:

10 Tips for Staying Safe and Warm:

  1. Layer Up: Dress in multiple layers to trap warm air close to your body.
  2. Hats and Gloves: Wear weather-appropriate accessories to prevent heat loss.
  3. Blankets and Throws: Layer indoor spaces with blankets for added warmth and comfort.
  4. Hot Beverages: Enjoy warm drinks to stay cozy from the inside out.
  5. Seal Drafts: Ensure windows and doors are sealed to keep cold air out.
  6. Use Space Heaters: Safely supplement central heating for added warmth.
  7. Hot Water Bottles: Warm your bed before bedtime, focusing on keeping feet warm.
  8. Stay Active: Engage in physical activity to generate body heat.
  9. Eat Warm Foods: Consume hearty meals to raise body temperature.
  10. Check On Others: Regularly check on those living alone, especially vulnerable individuals.

Hypothermia Awareness:

Hypothermia occurs when the body loses heat faster than it can produce it, leading to a dangerously low body temperature. Recognize signs such as shivering, slurred speech, and confusion. In emergencies, call 9-1-1. For non-emergencies, consult a nurse at Fraser Health Virtual Care: 1-800-314-0999 (10 am to 10 pm) or 8-1-1 anytime.
