WEATHER RESPONSE UPDATE: Tue, Dec 20, 1:00pm

Date

Facility Updates

Douglas Recreation Centre and the Library are closed. Timms Community Centre will be closing at 4:30 pm, and all programming will be cancelled.

Curbside Pickup Services Update

No curbside collection today due to the weather. Crews will assess the situation as the day goes on regarding tomorrow’s schedule. Updates will be provided as soon as we have information to share. Missed collections will be the first priority when collection resumes. As it will take some time to catch up please allow extra time for curbside material to be picked up. Please do your part and clear snow from lids and tops of your collection materials and shovel around your collection containers.

Snow Removal Update

All of the plows are working to clear roads in a priority sequence -- staff are providing 24/7 coverage working in shifts as part of our snow response plan. Remember, in heavy snowfall, roads get blanketed quickly and can look untouched even if a plow passed through recently.

How You Can Help During Snow Events

After it snows, do your part to help keep sidewalks safe and usable for people who depend on them to get around.

Sidewalk and walkway clearance is your responsibility. Highway & Traffic Bylaw No. 2871 requires residential (single-family and multi-family) owners and occupants, as well as commercial and industrial properties, to remove snow and ice from sidewalks adjacent to property within 24 hours of snowfall.

A few other reminders:

  • Shovel early and often to keep snow from building up or turning to ice, making it more difficult to clear.
  • Push snow onto your lawn or a designated parking stall, NOT the street. Shoveling snow onto the street is a hazard for vehicles and creates more work for snow plows, which slows down the clearing process.
  • Ensure accessible parking stalls on your property are clear of snow and ice.
  • Take care not to bury street storm/drainage grates when shoveling snow. Please clear any debris, including snow, from them to help avoid pooling in your neighbourhood as snow melts.
  • Clear a path to your garbage and recycling receptacles to help collection crews in the future.

The Government of British Columbia has issued a Traffic Advisory advising drivers in the lower mainland to stay off the roads and avoid non-essential travel today. Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. Keep roads clear for those who have to be on them.

To report any snow and ice concerns, submit a service request.
